Cyan enters technology collaboration with the
University of Essex to aid embedded design teaching
30 October 2006

Essex is the first University in the UK to use Cyan's embedded microcontrollers in their teaching programme.

Cambridge and Colchester , UK - 30 October 2006. Cyan Technology, the UK's only microcontroller manufacturer, has joined forces with The University of Essex's Department of Computer Science to provide students with state-of-the-art computer equipment. Cyan has donated 100 of its embedded microcontroller development boards to help teach embedded design to undergraduates studying in the Department of Computer Science.

Formally launched in September, the collaboration promises to be the beginning of a long-term partnership to assist the teaching of embedded design skills. Cyan is also working closely with the University to put together a framework for its involvement in sponsoring a prize for the best final year project. Through the collaboration The University of Essex becomes the first educational establishment in the UK to use Cyan's microcontrollers.

"Cyan is committed to forging closer links with universities and helping to create capable engineers for the future. The University of Essex is a great place to kick this off," explains Paul Johnson, CEO, Cyan Technology. "Better links between universities, the students and businesses can only have a positive effect on educational standards and talent entering the industry. The eCOG1 microcontroller development kits we've donated will play a valuable role in helping both undergraduate and MSc students to learn about developing applications and programming target devices, standing them in good stead for their future careers."

Dr Klaus McDonald-Maier, head of the University of Essex's Embedded and Intelligent Systems Research Group comments: "Essex is very proud to be first educational institution using Cyan's new embedded microcontrollers. As well as helping us to expand the curriculum on offer and adding to the motivation of students, the kits help students to obtain valuable experience of cutting edge technology and develop lasting skills which will be attractive to potential employers."

Cyan's eCOG1 development kits are ideal for embedded applications development using Cyan ultra-low power 16-bit microcontrollers. The Development Kit is designed to give the designer full access to all of the microcontroller's functionality. CyanIDE, Cyan's class leading software development environment for applications development and microcontroller configuration is also included. Together these tools enable designers to rapidly implement an optimised, cost effective design.

About Cyan Technology

Based in Cambridge in the UK, Cyan Technology is a fabless semiconductor company that focuses on the development of peripheral-rich ultra-low powered microcontrollers and its patented CyanIDE development tools. Cyan's multi-purpose flash microcontrollers offer significant advantages in ease-of-use, price, performance and ultra-low power consumption.

Cyan's own integrated development environment CyanIDE is issued free to all customers and includes a full ANSI C-compiler, Editor, Project File Manager, Simulator, Debugger and In-system Programmer supports the Company's entire range of current and future microcontrollers. The software makes chip integration into customers' products simple, quick, reliable and hence less expensive while dramatically reducing development time. About the University of Essex

The University of Essex was founded in 1964 when it opened its doors to a cohort of just 122 students. Since then, the University has grown in both reputation and size.

The University offers undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications across 19 academic departments spanning law, humanities, social sciences, science and engineering. Essex is consistently ranked among the top UK universities for the quality of its teaching and research.

The total student body now exceeds 9,000 and includes students studying at partner institutions South East Essex College in Southend and Writtle College in Chelmsford. A new collaborative partnership with the University of East Anglia to bring expansion into Suffolk and another with the Colchester Institute will further strengthen Essex's position as one of the eastern region's major providers of top-quality higher education.
